Holly and Hawthorne

An early poem, inspired by Victoria Magazine.

In this season,
wreathed with garland and velvet,
listen…

To the hushed falling
of Christmas stars in the dark,
dusting the mistletoe
with icy silver;
be rich and warm in the
firelight and evergreen:
crimson, emerald, and gold,
radiant in the arabesque of time.

Be joyous, shining,
as the childlike voices of starry carol
walk
whispering
into the morning…

O Immanuel,
O Immanuel, come.
